February 14, 2002: First post on new weblog area
I was introduced to weblogs by an old friend of mine about a year ago. I thought they were a great way for someone without a lot of web experience to keep a frequently updated text area on their site (as I am doing on Bluejake), or as a tool to create an entire site (Brooklyn Kid, Laura Holder). Weblogs have exploded in popularity because they are so easy to use, and combine some of the advantages of a text editor (like HomeSite or BBedit) with the ease of programs like Dreamweaver and Frontpage. Throw in a web-based FTP client, and you've got the ability to edit your weblog from anywhere.
Right now I am using Blogger Pro, a souped up version of Blogger. This is one of the better web log applications- and well worth the $35 that it costs to upgrade from the regular version. I didn't mind paying the money because I believe in supporting small companies like Pyra- they develop fun stuff for the rest of us. If you are using Blogger already, definitely consider upgrading.
I am also very interested in self-contained web log applications- mostly written in PERL. A great example is Greymatter by Noah Grey. You simply load his code into your CGI directory, CHMOD a few things, and you are ready to go. His program is a good solution for someone who wants to set up a more complicated weblog- with different content areas and types, and things like ranking posts and karma voting. Definitely worth a look.
I have a strong conviction that very few people will be reading this log, but I enjoy playing with the technology. I'm going to make an effort to update it at least once a week with my latest ideas and news- so please check this page again soon.
