March 14, 2002: Dusting off the Skates

I decided today had perfect weather to go out for the first skate of the year. I'm still using the K2 Catalyst in-line skates that I bought 2 years ago. Back in September I had them refurbished with new bearings and wheels, so they are in pretty good shape. I wanted to take my usual skate from Houstan Street on the West Side to Houstan Street on the East Side along the water and past the Battery, but the whole West Side park path is still closed off below Chambers Street because of September 11th. I ended up cutting East on Murray Street, and then skating past Ground Zero along the Eastern edge of the site. The street was crowded with tourists and all the work was going on out of sight down in the pit. The size of the site made an impression on me- it was like standing on the edge of the Meadow in Central Park- the sky seemed very large. After watching the whole scene for awhile, I skated over to South Street and up the East Side under the FDR. I tried to cut west through Stuyvesant Town and ended up getting lost in there- it's like Bermuda Triangle- I kept coming back to the same spot. Eventually I made it out and took the regular streets through Union Square and down University Place back home.
