March 18, 2002: Los Angeles in Winter

I'm leaving for LA on Thursday morning. Until then, I'll be sifting through the last of the work at OVEN and closing all the loose ends that I created during the two years of my employment here. It's a lot of documentation and back-up work, mostly finalizing architecture and user interface plans for applications that may or may not ever be launched. It's a little bit like conceptual art- not altogether necessary but challenging in its own way. I'll be back in New York City on March 28th. After that things are a little unclear. Freelancing again, for sure- and teaching, definitely- but the rest is a mystery.

I love going to Los Angeles- even though this must be the 8th or 9th visit in the last three years, every time I go I find something new. LA is mind-bogglingly big- people say it takes 20 minutes to get from any place in LA to any other place- but I have my doubts. Sometimes when I'm there I worry about the earthquakes, but I guess that each city comes with its own unique anxieties. There are so many great LA websites- I found this interactive guide to downtown before my last trip out there in November. I remember walking around Little Tokyo looking for a Maneki Neko- a Japanese lucky cat. I eventually found one in that Little Tokyo shopping center across from the downtown MoCa gallery. There is more to LA than just hanging out on the West Side and driving around. I'm fascinated by the sociology of the place- especially the makeup of the city in terms of wealth and class and race.

This trip is going to be pretty short. I've never been in the city on Oscar night- but I'd like to check out some of the happenings. Feel free to e-mail me while I'm away- I'll be checking it.
