April 11, 2002: Wayout in Brooklyn

Continuing my exercise regiment, today I skated to Brooklyn over the Williamsburg Bridge. This was actually the first time I'd ever been to Williamsburg during the day- I was surprised at how small it was. I mean, I grew up in Brooklyn for eighteen or so years before I moved to the city, and I always had this idea of Williamsburg as a giant hipster metropolis. Not so, apparently. I loved the bookstore in Downer's Pharmacy, and the big Bagel place down the block, and watching all the twenty somethings while away their unemployment. Still, for my money, the part of the skate that carried me through the wastelands of Greenpoint (up by Newton Creek) and along the East River were even more interesting. On the way back I stopped at the new Guss's pickles on Orchard Street off Grand- just a few feet from the apartment I used to share with Mike in 2000. Thanks to Rachel Grashow for helping me plot out the whole route.
