May 30, 2002: I Can Fly

I got into the web back in late 1994, but it wasn't until January of 1995 that I coded my first site. Back then, I was interested in graffiti- so this first site was supposed to be a gallery of different graf done by my friends. We put up the first version of the I Can Fly site in my web account at Columbia, but one of my friends posted an x-rated picture of an outline he had tattooed in ink on one of his girlfriends, and she complained, and we got kicked off the server. By then, we had become pretty close with Brett Webb and Susan Farrell at ArtCrimes, and they agreed to help us out by giving us webspace. The site is still up over there, and it consistently gets about 50 hits each day. I was reminded of the site by the same friend who posted the x-rated picture, and he passed on this completely hilarious 1997 interview I did with the New York Times about the site. A related feature was written by Joshua Kimerling a couple of years later.

In 1999, when I did a year of teaching at Stuyvesant High School, some of my more gifted students tracked down the site and distributed printouts to all of my classes. It was pretty horrifying. We keep meaning to redo the site, but the 1997 style is pretty cool.

the piece o' pi is cool. it reminds me of the math nerds from middle school who tried to memorize as many places of pi as possible. hence, it is perfect for a computer contest such as the 5k.

I'm saying, though! If only the judges would appreciate our brilliance.

Yeah, nice pi I agree...

Doesn't anyone remember the 4k demoscene from the old days of DOS? Maybe it is just me.
