June 4, 2002: Day 4 / Edinburgh to London

8:30am Wakeup call- late- but wake rested after 8 hours of sleep. Pack and cab to Waverley Station.
10am First class train to London King's Cross- very quiet and civilized. Nice view of Firth of Forth or whatever that body of water off to the East was.
2:45pm Arrive, cab to the Thanet Hotel on Bedford Street.
3pm Walk to Holborn Street tube stop. Central Line to Marble Arch. A rather bland area on edge of Hyde Park. Lunch (tuna) at Pret. Walk down through Mayfair, which was nice by the South end. U.S. Embassy on Grosvenor Square was quite hideous. Down to Piccadilly past Ritz and up and down Bond Street to Saville Row. Very nice. Back through Soho to Oxford Street. Soho also very nice on South edge. Golden Square very nice. Stopped to buy Zagat's Guide to London. Discussed finding a new hotel- as purpose of Marble Arch trip was to check out hotel for the return leg on June 15th-20th. It looked like no fun, so we're searching again. Nice rooms in West End run about $250/night. Back at Thanet now, planning our next move. While we think, the British Army is doing flyovers to honor the Queen's Jubilee. I spot the jets as they fly over Bloomsbury toward the Mall and Buckingham Palace.
7pm Walk through the neighborhood, found two Radisson hotels on other side of the British Museum that looked nice. Then dinner at Belgo Centraal (mussels and fries). Walk through Covent Gardens to Charing Cross Road and then back here.
10pm Slightly queasy from packaged ice cream cone.
