June 9, 2002: Day 9 / The Hague to Berlin

9am Wake rested after 8 hours of good sleep. Checked internet for awhile while Karen ate breakfast with Donna downstairs.
11am Drove back to Scheveningen to take picture on boardwalk above the beach. Wondered if the water was the Atlantic or still considered part of the English channel or what. Wondered if we were across from Brighton- made note to check map.
12:30pm Checked out and drove back to Scheveningen to buy herrings. Eventually found a very nice fish market south of beaches in the Harbor area. Bought 36 herrings (green type- very fresh) and some Dutch sushi (a little suspicious). The trafe also looked very good.
2pm Arrived at Madelon's family home in Westmaas, outside Rotterdam after driving near the giant shipping port- one of the largest in the world. Very industrial and beautiful- but the house was past that area outside this small village. Very Netherlands. Surrounded by wheat and potato fields and on a nice lake. Boat outside, and very cool Dutch furniture on the inside. Ate herring and talked about the wedding with Walter and Mario and Madelon's brother, Jacob (actually, his name is whatever Jacob is in Dutch). Herring was very fishy.
4pm-7pm Drove from Westmaas to Osnabruk in Germany and stopped for an interesting traditional German meal. I had good Schweinschnitzel, basically a pork fillet fried with oil. Very good.
7pm-12am Drove from Osnabruck to Berlin down the A2, part of the German autobahn. At about 200km/hr (120mph) I started to become a little nervous- but we were in a German built SUV. Nice scenery in East Germany.
12am Arrived at Alsterhof Hotel, somewhere in West Berlin, very nice and business like and very modern. Going to sleep now.
