June 12, 2002: Day 12 / Berlin
9am Woke rested after 8 hours of sleep- lots of strange dreams.
10:30am-12pm Frustrating walk to the Kurdam looking for an Einstein Kaffe. End up finding one about 10 blocks down. No food for me. Also, internet was broken and we can't find a place to do laundry.
12:30pm Cab to Gemaldegalerie in Kulturforum. Great 16th/17th century paintings- especially the Dutch Proverbs by Bosch. Also good Rembrants in big modern space.
1:30pm Quick stop at Neue National Galerie to check out Mies Van Der Rohes very cool Bauhaus building- very beautiful.
2pm Cab to Reichstag- line still too long to get in. Great lunch at the big Einstein cafe on Unter Den Linden- very good turkey club and apple struedel. Walked down Unter Den Linden to Berliner Dom- giant Protestant scary church. Dome very similar to St. Peters- lots of cool statues of Calvin and Luther and everyone.
4pm Walked up on Museum Island but skipped museum- too tired- saved for next time. Cabbed back to Alsterhof.
5pm Walked to KaDeWe for new books- showed Karen the Wintergarten on top.
6pm Back at hotel, slight stomachache.
9pm Walked two blocks to Kashmir Palace, a nice Indian restaurant on Marburgerstrasse. I had a nice curry soup and chicken tikka.
11pm Back at hotel, packing for 9:30am train to Prague from Berlin Zoo station. Five hours in 2nd class- what could go wrong?!
Notes for next time in Berlin: Reichstag dome, Charlottenburg, renovated Brandenburg Gates, Museum Island.
