June 17, 2002: Day 17 / London

8am Wakeup with slight stomachache. Shower won't turn off. 88 degrees outside and sunny.
9am Walked to Holborn Station and noticed British Museum workers were on strike. Took the tube (Piccadilly line) to South Kensington, and made our way to Victoria and Albert Museum. Lots of stuff. Very good jewelry, furniture, and tapestry. Beautiful 19th Century building. Walked up the Brompton Road to Harrod's. Amazing store- nothing like it anywhere else- with the Egyptian escalators and cashiers in full suits. Bought soap for the girls and tea for Thuy Le, and explored the entire store.
12pm Walked up to Knightsbridge for a look at Harvey Nichols- not as nice as Harrod's- then walked through Belgravia and saw all the embassies. I thought about Joseph Conrad's The Secret Agent, which takes place around there. The neighborhood was very posh.
1pm Walked through the Green Park to Mayfair and stopped at some of the stores on Saville Row. Passed on buying anything and walked down Regent Street and got Karen a Burbar jacket. After, walked through Soho to the hotel.
3pm Walked to Easyinternet on Tottenham Court Road and Bedford- two blocks away. Then down to Covent Gardens to look at the shops. Paul Smith nice as usual. Karen bought shoes.
4:30pm Back at hotel- resting. Heat was exhausting.
7pm-11pm Met David Schuiteman- my old PM from OVEN- on Wardour and Oxford in Soho. Walked down to Greek Street off Old Compton for some drinks, and then went to dinner. Lots of Stella Artois beer and good chicken. Good to see David after a couple of months. Lots of good conversation. Walked back to Charing Cross and found the hotel, quite drunk.
