July 18, 2002: First Person Singular (Version 2)

If you recognize this image of Jacob Nielsen's Designing Web Usability, it is probably because of the iconic cover art produced by First Person Singular. FPS is a small design shop half run and owned by my pal James Tung. Their work is pretty astounding, and turns up everywhere. Before Jen Chung introduced me to James I had already bought three things designed by First Person Singular- the Nielsen book, a photography book entitled Voyeur, and the DVD of Dassin's gangster film Rififi. The last, by the way, has one of the best DVD cover designs I have seen so far. Anyway, James and I have been putting together a site for First Person Singular, and I thought I would link to it to get some feedback. Remember- it's still a preliminary version.

The FPS final site is up at www.firstpersonsingular.net!

Hey!

Jake, once again thank you on a job well done.

We're trying to arrange drinks, but it looks like everyone's schedule is a bit off today. Maybe we'll do it during the weekend.

And...do remember to pass on info for your business card.

Cheerio.

Hey Jake. Nice visual design. But a couple things are disconcerting: 1) you're not really planning on using big image maps/no html text for all the pages, right? 2) the anti-aliased text is hard to read 3) the interface for the portfolio could be more informational -- add some "title" attributes to all the <hrefs> in the image map so the user knows what to expect when the click. Sounds like a lot of criticism, but it's a very nice visual design. Your personal site is much more usable and elegant in some ways, and I don't say that because we are long lost twins. Good luck! Ciao!

Ravi, I don't believe we had the chance to interact before, but thank you for the criticisms. They will be noted.

A bientot.

Ravi is right- in the long run, we'll have to convert the FPS site into something more compliant with search and accessibility rules. As James and I have discussed, our methodology is still evolving- and has not yet incorporated that kind of coding. Expect it soon!
