August 15, 2002: Prague Floods
I was in Prague for a few days back in July. It struck me as being a beautiful city- albeit a heavily touristed one. I loved the old buildings up by the castle and the newer ones from the 18th Century in the Jewish Quarter and around the Old Town Square. I especially liked walking along the Vltava River at night- watching the castle tower over the city on the other side. The Charles Bridge was just one of those things you never forget- so solid looking and ancient. Anyway, if you've been reading CNN you know that the whole city is under about 20 feet of water and most of the city is under evacuation order. It's so strange- I mean, things looked fine six weeks ago. Anyway- the saddest part is that the Zoo flooded and killed a 35 year old Indian elephant named Kadir. It really depresses me- I mean, dying in a flood was probably the last thing the elephant expected when he emigrated to the Czech Republic from India.

Yeah, the flood according to my Czech friend has practically shut down the country.
I wish someone kept a Prague Blog updating us with new pictures.
