August 17, 2002: Sneakers

As I packed on Friday for this week's trip to Los Angeles, I realized that my current black New Balance sneakers were beginning to smell a little bit off. They had served me well for the last year, so I wasn't too upset at having to replace them. We went sneaker shopping yesterday on Melrose- the place was just filled top to bottom with retro-style sneakers, so it took about an hour to find just the right ones. I decided on a pair of New Balance 474s. They are similar to my last pair, but in gray suede instead of flat black leather. Why am I talking so much about sneakers? I suppose it was this article I read today on the CNN site, talking about how retro styles are quickly becoming the largest selling sector of the sneaker industry.

Kurt Gödel's insight was that in formal logic, the manipulation of symbols according to rules in order to logically prove or disprove a statement, the symbols meant nothing but what we made them mean. Therefore, he could convert the symbols to numbers and apply arithmetical rules that were the equvalents of the logical rules used on the symbols. He could also use the numbers that represented logical statements in logical statements. So, being a clever SOB, he made a statement that said "This number is not produceable by this logic system". The number the statment referred to was the number that represented the statement itself. He then went on to prove that you could use the same logic system to both prove and disprove his statement. The logic system he used was the Principa Mathematica, the basic foundation for all of our mathematics. A lot of people never forgave him for finding a paradox in the most fundamental level of math.

Godel off-topic for a post on sneaker shopping? Perhaps on some sites. But at Bluejake, you are free to be whoever you want to be.

Uh...Gödel's name has been invoked in all things Postmodern, so why not sneaker shopping?

Is there an equivalent in NYC? I have yet to drag my ass over to the Rivington Sneaker Club...

Let's go together! I love sneakers. I remember going to this place in Little Tokyo in LA about a year ago- it had all these Japanese imported sneakers- weird Nike styles and stuff. Of course, no sizes big enough for my size 11.5 feet.

Yah. We should go. The Japanese sneakers always get the better colorways and they are infinitely cooler than the American editions.

I haven't done it yet, but I am going to use my partner to send me shoes from Tokyo from now on.

was the goedel comment cut'n pasted from an encycolopedia article?

Ha- and I assumed E.Z. wrote it himself.

Unfortunately, no. I plagiarized it from a post on http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/

I am looking to buy retro sneakers in bulk, if anyone knows people in Tokyo or other parts of the Japanese region, let me know. There is good money to be made.

my new balance sneakers after they got wet smell like piss. What a rip off!!!
