September 4, 2002: Faith and Blogs

Last night we watched the new Frontline documentary on PBS, Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero. It was extremely well done- a moving meditation on the consolation of faith, the problem of evil, and connecting with God in these troubled times. I remember being on the roof just before the towers fell, trying to put together some kind of prayer. I couldn't really think of anything- it was all too sickening and immediate. It was interesting to see the range of opinions in the documentary- some people felt disconnected from God, or blamed God for what happened, but a lot of people felt just the opposite. I was really moved by this retired firefighter, Bernie Heeran- in the face of everything, he still had his faith: "I question, why not me, and leave my son? I mean, I would have switched. ... I asked Him in the beginning, 'If you could give me this one, I would appreciate it.' But He had nothing to do with this. There were a lot more people who could have been killed. He was fighting evil that day, like He does every day. ..."

The last few weeks I've noticed the issue of faith come up in a whole bunch of different blogs. I also discovered a new region in the Blogoverse- the faith blog. There are apparently thousands of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim blogs- an amazing multiplicity of voices. There is something strange and Kabbalic about all of this- I'm just not sure exactly what it is.

I also thought it was moving when Bernie Heeran was talking about the "givebacks" - like he could have lost three sons instead of one, there could have been many more firefighters lost...

My brother and I watched it and thought about our father, who was on a United plane at Logan Airport in Boston, bound for San Francisco, when all of this happened. My dad got lucky and so did we. Why?
