September 19, 2002: Advanced Multimedia with Flash MX

I'm teaching both sections of Advanced Multimedia with Flash MX at the New School starting today. Both classes are twelve sessions, each about two and a half hours long. The first version of the syllabus can be found at JacobDobkin.com and will evolve as the class continues. I've decided to take a radical jump into the unknown and use Josh Davis' Flash to the Core as my main textbook. I like the exercises and they seem appropriate for what is in truth an intermediate level Flash class. I've been arguing with the New School to change the name to Intermediate Flash MX, and create a true Advanced level class. That would probably deal with building applications in Flash, setting up actual large Flash sites, and integrating those sites with various content management tools- way beyond my skill level. Also integrating Flash with XML and things like that. Anyway, this Flash MX class should be a lot of fun. There are still seats available for the Saturday section. Anyone want to enroll?

Also interesting: Jakob Neilsen's classic article on Flash. It is worth noting that Flash has become much more accessible since he wrote this article in 2000. However, I still agree- Flash is not appropriate for every site. Including this one.

I'm extremely over flash. More visionary executions aside, I think a lot of people want control over their web-browsing experience, and Flash tends to hinder that. I'm speaking as not only a marketing strategist, but also as an instant gratifier.

I agree with Jen
