September 25, 2002: Birthday Presents

My birthday is seven days from today. The big 26. I'm not upset about getting on in years, although I do regret making many of those "I'll be dead by 25" type jokes back in college. I'm not sure where the birthday party is going to be- someplace cheap and dark and downmarket in the West Village or SoHo would be my guess. If you are tearing your hair out trying to think of appropriate gifts, and have a few hundred dollars that you feel like throwing my way, I'd like to suggest the following ideas: the Minolta Dimage X camera, the Samsung a500 phone, and the PC model Apple iPod. Do I need any of these things? No. Should you give your money to an appropriate charity instead? Almost certainly. Sometimes my desire for aluminum gilded technology products so repulses me that I feel like running away and joining one of those Zen monasteries- like Leonard Cohen did ten years ago. I'd be headed there right now if I wasn't worried that Sprint PCS probably doesn't have good coverage in Tibet or Malibu or wherever those places tend to be located.
