September 29, 2002: Two Bridges in 17 Minutes
About two weeks ago, I realized that I was running out of new skate routes. I got the idea that skating for speed could be as interesting as skating for distance, and I decided to put my theory to the test on the Two Bridges skate. Last time I was over the bridges and back (the portion mapped in green) in just over 19 minutes. Today, I shaved two minutes off to come in just five or ten seconds over 17 minutes. The cool weather played to my advantage, but the Brooklyn Bridge was overflowing with tourists blocking my quick ascent. I made it up and over the bridge in about 7 minutes, but at great cost: I felt like someone was choking my windpipe and stomping on my chest at the same time. The dizzying naseau and stabbing pain added a couple of minutes to my summit of the Manhattan Bridge, but I was still able to get up and over in a little less than 10 minutes. As I reached the finish line at Bowery I came pretty close to throwing up, but I was happy with the improved time.

According to my MapQuest calculations, this route marked in green is exactly 12,012 feet, or 2.28 miles. So if I took the course in 17 minutes, that means I was averaging a pretty slow 8.05 miles per hour- which is still not bad considering the bridges are really big hills.
Is it possible to do this course in 15 minutes?
have you skated over along the route that runs along the bqe towards cesar's bay bazaar in brooklyn yet?
Yeah- on the Coney Island skate about six weeks ago.
Another effect of racing can be the trots.
I'll keep that in mind as I go for the 15 minute record. I'd like to set up a two bridges race. Do you think anyone else would want to compete?
