December 17, 2002: Long Pages

One piece of work that I'm doing requires a series of about 30 screenshots. I was tempted to do it the old fashioned way (PrtSc + Photoshop) but I decided to upgrade to a screen capture program. On the recommendation of a friend, I chose Hypersnap DX, and I'm very pleased with it. One of my favorite features: it can capture long pages by auto-scrolling them. Defying the old 1998 web rules, long pages have become more widely accepted over the last few years, mostly due to the success of news sites and blogs that require more space on their front pages. Another factor contributing to the growth of long pages is that while larger monitors have become available, smaller screens are still widely used. This forces all of us web programmers to continue optimizing our work for 800x600 pages. Since we can't go wider than about 725 pixels, we are forced to go long. Some examples of long pages that I like very much:

rohmergirl nice

rohmergirl what's your opinion, long web pages or more pages to click through?

rohmergirl i liked longer pages - fucking amazon takes so long to find all the books a prolific writer has written, for example

thebluejake i know

thebluejake i believe in long pages for specific kinds of content

thebluejake brochure sites should be optimized to one page length- but for news or informational sites, multiple page lengths is fine, as long as the important stuff (navigation, recent or important stories) is above the first page fold
