December 29, 2002: They Might Be Giants, In Concert

I went to see They Might Be Giants play Irving Plaza this weekend, and the show was great. For once, the band was playing with a great opening act, the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. Their opening number, "Mountain Trip to Japan, 1959" was spectacular- a true multimedia experience. It's what I imagine the weird art bands sounded like in 1981. Speaking of weird art bands, just as they were finishing their first song, David Byrne of the Talking Heads walked right in front of me. He was wearing a long velvet-type jacket. When They Might Be Giants finally got on stage they played a mix of songs from their children's album, No!, and some old stuff, including Send Me an Angel from their first album, and Slowly Twisting (in the Wind) from Flood. Robin Goldwasser showed up to sing In the Middle, and Dan Miller got out from behind the guitar to sing on Fingertips. All in all an excellent show.

Nice post! I am interested in seeing the Trachtenburg Family perform on Conan on January 3 now. This was pretty funny as well, a comparison of Meg White from the White Stripes and Rachel Trachtenburg.
