January 25, 2003: Duplex

duplex monitor setup

We just got a new 18" flat panel display, so there was a question about what to do with the old 15" Sony LCD. I tried to convert it into a digital picture frame, but the wall where we would have hung it was about 25 feet from the computer, and there was too much signal degradation. I returned all the cable that I had bought for that project, and used the refund to buy a cheap ATI Radeon 7000 PCI video card for my main computer. I installed it and set it up as a duplex screen. Mostly, I like to leave the email and IM stuff in the left hand panel, and keep the main panel open for work. I still have a KVM switch installed, so I can switch the main monitor to run off the old computer that is hidden behind my main desk. It has all the old browsers and programs going back to 1997, and sometimes I use it for testing. The attempt at a digital picture frame isn't a total loss- I downloaded a screensaver program for the project, and I'm using it to rotate through 2000 of my old pictures when I'm not working. Still- I would still like to pick up a digital picture frame- maybe this 17" from digi-frame.
