February 1, 2003: Chinese New Year

chinese new year dragon, mott street, NYC chinatown

K and I walked down to Chinatown to check out the New Year festivities. There were three or four dragons on Mott Street, and we sort of trapped one on Doyers off Pell Street. The weather was dreary, and the crash of the space shuttle cast a pall over everything, but people seemed to be making the best of it. I took some pictures to capture the moment.

i remember Chinese new year in Chinatown a few years back.. those dragons had the most fascinating effect on me. somehow, i decided that they were too realistic and started to feel the most intense fear whenever one headed in my direction. it was even scarier, i would say, when i heard the approaching dragon bells.. this would, of course, cause me to freak out and run in the opposite direction, only to find more dragon heads floating around there. O_O needless to say, the people i was with found it extremely entertaining.

I don't think I can stress the importance of Chinese New Year to Chinese people...everyday my parents would call me with some new superstitious thing I had to do, in order to ward away bad luck and bring in good luck. And who am I to argue with that logic?

Chinese New Year is cool- I love the way the dragons shake their asses as they move.
