February 12, 2003: Cubicle Orchid

I'm working a job at a pretty nice place right now. The only drawback is the office space, which is actually great, if you go for cubicles. My friend Victor has tried to bring a little beauty to the situation by raising an orchid on his ledge overlooking Madison Avenue. Apparently the orchids like bright, indirect light, which our floor has in spades. I've been interested in orchids for a long time- unlike those poseurs who got into it after Adaptation came out.

I think you've been interested in orchids as long as the book, The Orchid Thief, has been out. That is a very nice orchid at the office. My mom has fish in her office. She's obsessed with them. This other woman at her office has two turtles. For some reason, I feel that animals would be acceptable to AT&T in Hong Kong but not AT&T in New Jersey.
I'd like to hook up my cube with some pets- maybe a monkey to do some light typing. Unfortunately monkeys live for a long time- I wonder if the one I bought would be able to learn new skills as the technology landscape changes. I bet a dolphin could do that- but my cube is really not big enough for a dolphin tank.
Hmm, I think a cat would like my southern exposure that usually blinds me. At a now-defunct technology company, there was an Aibo. I wonder how it would take for people to notice I had a small pet in my office.
If you do get a monkey for your cube, make sure it isn't a new-world monkey. They have prehensile tails that turn out to be an evolutionary advantage in an environment that requires simultaneous use of keyboard and mouse. You'll be out competed for reproductive opportunities right in your own office.

i would feel real sorry for any animals who would have to exist in cubicles - i'd rather work with them in their environemnt, like some jungle or preserve... having the orchid around is a nice sublte reminder that work is certainly not everything ;-)
