February 28, 2003: About this war

It's a rare moment when I comment about politics here on Bluejake, but I think the time demands it. Most people assume that I am against the war in Iraq, simply because I grew up in a radical leftist household in Park Slope, and support other liberal causes. Wrong. I'm actually far more ambivalent. I hate tyrants and bullies, so seeing a guy like Saddam Hussein sitting pretty for ten years while gassing his own people and pointing missles at Israel galls me a great deal. I believe that some wars are just, and some causes are worth the sacrafice of life. For me, the only question that matters is whether it is just to free Iraq of Saddam Hussein. All the other points about how it will only increase terrorism here and how it's all about the oil, etc, are just moot. Either it's just on the face of it or it's not. What particularly galls me is the reflexive and overblown quality of the left's response to the whole thing. It's fine to hate George Bush and suspect his motives. Personally I think that his policies siphon money from the poor and deliver it to the filthy rich, and for that reason I've never liked him. But come the hell on- he's not even in the same class of evil as the dictators over in the Middle East. Can I at least get an Amen on that?

Also- if I hear one more lefty comment regarding Israel, I may need to officially renounce being a liberal. Beyond my personal/religious connection to the place, I'd like to remind everyone over in Park Slope that Israel is the only democracy in that region. That may not mean much to other people, but it means a whole lot to me.
