March 17, 2003: First skate
Yesterday afternoon the weather was getting warmer and I decided to take my first skate of the year. I dug my Catalyst K2s out of the closet, found my wristguards, checked the wheels, and got into the skater's mindset. I also grabbed my camera, which is unusual because normally I like to skate unencumbered with bags or equipment. I made my way over to the west side skate path and after taking a few pictures at the piers, made my way down toward the Battery. As I rounded the southern tip of Manhattan, the sun set, and I captured a whole slew of amazing pictures. The skates were performing well- I think that I had the wheels rotated or replaced at the end of last year's skating season- sometime in November. After the sun went down I put the camera away and caught some serious speed going down the east side path. Normally I would have continued up the path to Houston, but I was concerned about mud in the East River Park. Instead, I cut west just north of the Manhattan Bridge, and after getting lost in the projects somewhere down by Cherry Street I found myself on Grand. A few minutes later I was crossing Allen on Broome going very fast- the smell of Spring was in the air and everyone was out on the streets. It was just one of those moments- for a second I remembered just why I love living downtown.

Those moments of remembering why you love living downtown are more fleeting these days, are they?
