April 14, 2003: Two Bridges in about 19 Minutes

I had a meeting on Sunday afternoon, so I only had an hour for skating this weekend. I decided to bring back the Two Bridges timed route that I was doing last year. I stopped at Radio Shack to get a stopwatch, because I want to get a little more precise about how long each part of the route takes, and also because I'm crazy like that. The weather was beautiful- 50 degrees and a totally clear sky, so the Brooklyn Bridge was crowded with tourists. I was up and over the bridge pretty quickly, but I think I jammed the stopwatch in my pocket, because it was stopped at 7 minutes 45 seconds and I don't think I was moving that fast.

I was more careful coming back over the Manhattan Bridge. It took me 9 minutes to make it from the steps on the Brooklyn side to the Bowery exit of the path in Manhattan. I felt like crap after the skate- wheezing, sick to my stomach... but 19 minutes isn't such a bad time for the first try of the season.
