April 18, 2003: L.A. Journal, Day 1

In the spirit of my last travelogue, I'm recording the details of this week's trip to Los Angeles.

5am Woke up feeling strangely refreshed after four hours of sleep in Park Slope. Only slightly sick from the overeating at the Seder the night before. Happy and nervous.

6am Showered- oddly no shampoo available. Hair frizzy for the rest of the day.

6:45am Caught a ride to JFK with dad. He devised an ingenious route- Ocean Parkway to the Belt. I was at the Delta terminal in less than 25 minutes.

7:15am Basically a full strip search- shoes off, laptop case opened, luggage inspected. The guy was nice about it... he actually complimented me on my shoes as he was taking them away to the x-ray machine.

8:15-2:30pm Uneventful flight to Los Angeles- slept, finished The Boy Who Followed Ripley, read some of Twain's Huck Finn. Watched most of a Chris Rock DVD until my Thinkpad died. Repeatedly checked to make sure I hadn't misplaced anything during the flight.

11:15am K and E met me at the airport. Sunny and warm in Los Angeles as we drove up Sepulveda to the 405.

12pm Unpacked, carefully. Showered. Ate some passover leftovers. Feeling pretty good. K presented a nice stripped shirt she had picked up the day before. We talked while she hung everything up.

1pm Went for a ride to Beverly Hills to buy some shoes. Ended up with another pair of Costume Nationales from Barneys. Too expensive, but so what. Feet have to have shoes. Wandered around Rodeo for an hour- saw a guy who had been on Murphy Brown a thousand years ago. Also Eugene Levy, looking very tall.

3pm Haircut in Westwood at Annie's Beauty Salon. Too short for K's tastes but I think it looks okay. Drove to Brentwood to drop off the drycleaning.

5pm Back at K's in Westwood. Going to have a quiet night here at home with everyone.

8pm Dinner with K's family- chicken, matzoh ball soup, salad.

10pm Already asleep on my feet.
