April 21, 2003: L.A. Journal, Day 4
9am Woke up, rested- E left for D.C. last night, so I'm crashing in his bed. Very comfortable. Checked email- a bunch more congratulations, especially from the people at work. Much appreciated.
10am Made some breakfast (matzoh, what else?) and started to design a workout routine for the summer months. Checked and rechecked our ballpark figures for the number of people that would come to the wedding, so we could reserve a place this week. Looked outside and the sky looks overcast.
12pm I drove us down to Beverly Hills. K got a coffee at the Coffee Bean on Beverly Drive, but didn't like it because it was cold. Walked over to C to get the ring sized. The original ring was a 5, but K needed a 4.75. The said it would take a couple of hours. I played with the cool ring sizing tool while they made the arrangements. Apparently I'm an 8.
1pm Drove down Wilshire to LACMA for the Sargent and Ansel Adams shows. The place was hopping with schoolkids. Just as we walked in the sky began to clear. The Sargent show was mainly his Italian paintings- only a few portraits. Nice, but nothing overwhelming. The Ansel Adams show was better. A comprehensive survey. Some of the stuff was amazing- so much detail, contrast, and emotion in his landscapes.
2:30pm Walked down past the Japanese Gallery to the La Brea Tar Pit. I took a couple of pictures of the sludge and posed with the elephants. I always feel bad for the mother elephant who is drowning in the tar. Today I noticed she seems to sway back and forth in the ooze, which lends it a little more realism.

3pm Drove up to Sunset and had a Chinese chicken salad lunch at Chin-Chin. Delicious. Watched the people walking by the Sunset Plaza shops. Talked about things and made plans.
4pm Back down Sunset to Beverly to pick up the ring at C. Fits perfectly now, and looks great. K is in love with it- I keep catching her looking at it in under various light sources, and doing that move with the hand.
5pm Split up- K took the rental car back to the rental place in Culver City, and I followed her in the other car. I listened to some They Might Be Giants while I was stuck in traffic on the 405. Not a bad way to spend a half hour. The 10 was quicker and I made it to the office without incident.
6pm Back at the apartment, catching up on more correspondence. Surprisingly, none of the Dobkin-Greengold extended family has called- apparently they are unimpressed by engagements.
7pm Jumped back in the car to catch "A Mighty Wind" in Century City- very amusing. I prefered Waiting for Guffman, but this was more moving. Did anyone else really enjoy the music?
9pm Dinner at Kate Mantilini's on Wilshire. I had the open face hot turkey sandwich, which is the best in all of L.A. K had a Cobb salad. Over dinner K made plans with her mom to visit the different hotels to scope them out. More on that tomorrow.
11pm Back at the apartment, feeling good and tired.
Comments
A Mighty Wind was funny, but not as funny as Best in Show or Waiting for Guffman. In fact, I was a little bored at times. The momentum was very uneven. The music, though, was great.
