May 12, 2003: On eating kangaroo

kangaroo steak We ended up at 8 Mile Creek by accident on Saturday night- Les Halles was overbooked and J and I were hungry. We ended up on Mulberry a few minutes later and got a table in the back of the restaurant, out in the hidden garden. Apparently the staff at 8 Mile Creek likes making fun of the patrons, because we were catching it from everyone- the waiter, the manager, the bartender. They didn't like us high-fiving- they said we had to take it outside. They didn't like it when I ordered a Cosmo- apparently in Australia men do not have mixed drinks. It was all good natured fun until they challenged us to a boxing match- but by then the food came. Jen has a much longer exposition on the eats, but I would like to record the details of my first kangaroo meal:

1. Tastes kind of like steak- rare, tangy steak
2. Not at all tough or gamey- actually very tender
3. Beautiful fleshy color- blood red medium-rare
4. Crisp at the edges- but very soft in the middle

Now I'm all about Australian food. Unfortuanately, I can't think of any other Australian animals to eat. Anyway- go to 8 Mile Creek for dinner- it was all very good.
