church procession, thompson street, 7pm

I was walking home from the train at around 7pm on Wednesday when I noticed about a hundred people walking up the block singing Ave Maria. It amazing- the block was totally quiet except for the singing and even the hoods on the park benches across the street stopped talking and watched. I'm not sure what the procession was all about.

It's May, Virgin Mary'a month. I'm almost for sure it was related with some hispanic community. Here in Spain this kind of processions (we call them "procesiones") are quite usual at this time of the year.

BTW love your city and the way you "see" it...watching you pics makes me "home"sick...

Living up in the Portugeuse end of Cambridge, MA I had a chance to see a lot of these types of processions throughout the year. It was always strange to be woken up on a Sunday morning to the sound of a marching band (a not very good one at that) and when you peered bleary-eyed out the window, were greeted with the most massive picture of Christ that you have ever seen, being carried by 30 people held high on sticks above their heads. Or the money parade...not sure which saint it was but it was amazing to see them carrying the Saint with money taped all over it down the road. People would stop them so they could tape more money to the statue.

Was pretty wild. Mostly old women and young children. The costumes were the best part. :)
