July 2, 2003: Summer skates

The weather has turned and I'm almost done with work, so I've been celebrating by strapping on the skates as often as I can. I've got a system: wait until an hour before sunset, grab a camera, and head out. When I get down to the street I pick a direction- if I go south I usually end up at one of the bridges, and then over to Brooklyn. If I go north, I end up at the West Side, and then down around the Battery or up the West Side. Yesterday night I did the Battery skate, but instead of going from Houston to Houston as usual, I decided to throw in the bridges and DUMBO as well. There was this amazing light reflecting off the warehouses as I skated along Main Street in Brooklyn- nothing like it anywhere in the world.

Today, I was feeling lazy and tired, but knowing that I can't skate this weekend, I decided to do the loop through North Brooklyn and Queens. The light wasn't as good tonight, because of pretty solid clouds, but when I made it back to the city there was a nice sunset over the West Side.
