July 12, 2003: At A60

It's terminally unhip to admit it, but I was pretty excited to visit A60, the roof bar at 60 Thom, a hip hotel a block down Thompson from my apartment.

They have some ridiculous membership card, so unless you are invited to a party up there or a VIP, there's no access. There's another nice lounge/bar on the second floor, but knowing there was drinking going on up on the roof pretty much ruined it for me.

We got into A60 by following the VIP route- our friend G is a well-connected man in this town, and he lent us a card for a couple of weeks. I found the bar to be pretty nice- beautiful view, lots of well dressed downtown and B&T folks, acceptible drinks served in shatterproof plastic glasses. If you go, the lounge on the opposite side is much less crowded. My only objection? The staff, and their "who the fuck are you?" attitudes. I've never enjoyed whipping out a VIP card so much. And now I can do it all the time, since G put in a good word for us and got us our own card.

J has a complete write-up of the experience at Gothamist.

I have to hand it to Jake - when this Eurotrashy couple from probably Murray Hill tried to take our bench, Jake handed me his camera and totally got in their face and scared them away. It took a "Yo, I guess we're all hanging out!" plus Jake trying to sit in the dude's lap and they slunk away.
