July 27, 2003: Cigars

Cigars always remind me of my grandfather- he enjoyed a good smoke now and again. Last week, I was up in the Bronx visiting their old neighborhood, and later, when I was on Arthur Avenue having lunch, I picked up this cigar at the cigar stand in the market. Smoking it last night, I was reminded of some of the other good cigars I've smoked- particularly the Cubans that I used to puff back in 1997, when I was living in Salamanca, Spain- and I also thought of Eddie Dobkin- who's been gone about ten years now.
Eddie Dobkin is quite the looker. I love the way his upper left eyebrow is arched knowingly as he enjoys his stogie in his backyard. Jake, luckily, you have 40+ years to figure it out.
totally- the dobkins have definitely gotten uglier as the generations passed- grandpa could have been in the movies, with that profile.
I'm interested in the eddie dobkin, the Chicago handicapper from the 30s and 40s. Can you help?
