August 3, 2003: Pacific Coast Highway, Day 2 (b)

Another half hour had passed, driving up and down the hills, by the time I reached the entrance to Point Reyes. I stopped to get a map and a couple of sandwiches, and then drove at top speed down the twenty miles to the lighthouse. Amazing diversity of land- green forest, rolling grain-covered plains. I reached the South Beach area and decamped, walking along the beach while eating a turkey sandwich. Then down to the lighthouse, where I climbed down the 300 steps for a very informative information session on the lens system used to direct ships at sea. Apparently each lighthouse has a unique signal- and if the ship can see two lighthouses, and identify them, the captain knows exactly where he is. After a half hour the fog started rolling in, so I climbed back up to the car and drove north towards Bodega Bay.
