bobst library, nyu

After a long, relaxing summer in California, I've returned to New York and started graduate school at NYU. Today I found myself cracking open a textbook for the first time in five years. Disorienting! Anyway- to maintain my focus, I took a couple of walks around the library. The architectural symmetry of the building is overwhelming.

"Symmetry" is an understatement. I just graduated from NYU and I know its more like a symmetrical prison design. Really.

What are you studying?

i'm studying how to get my ass a job. other areas of interest include urban pedagogy and information arbitrage.

I have a bunch of friends who attend NYU, and we're constantly partying at Bar None. You should party with us.

i'd love to party with you guys- i'm new to the school, and unlike at the other 5 schools i've gone to, this time i want to make a couple of friends.

interesting fact about the NYU library: if you stand on the top floor (south side) and gaze downward you may not feel the urge to kill yourself anymore. it was purposely designed to reduce suicide jumpers. if you look at the tops of the metal gates on each floor they are designed to look like crosses while the floor was designed to look like spikes that are far away. it was, of course, inspired by MC Escher’s drawing “Depth.”

toby, my father loved that tiled floor so much he wanted to replicate it in our kitchen (despite the fact the effect would not be visible even if we stood on the counters). Needless to say, we was unable to find anyone to do it and it was never done.

this is too weird. someone just committed suicide in the nyu library
