September 22, 2003: Gas Tower Art

Back in the early 1980s, we used to drive out to the island to visit my aunt and uncle in Roslyn. On the way back, I'd always know we were approaching home when I saw these giant gas towers off the left side of the BQE, somewhere near Williamsburg. Anyway, about two years ago they blew the towers up. The other day, skating across the Pulaski, I noticed these steel boxes welded to the guard rail. There were perhaps a dozen of them, each with a slide taken on the day of the gas towers' collapse. Who put them there? And why? [also available: more pictures of the implosion]

at the time, i lived in the west village, and i was too late waking up that morning to drag myself out to brooklyn for the implosion.
