December 6, 2003: West Village 2

The West Village is like the Bermuda triangle- small in actual area, but vast in terms of mystery. In some sense, the West Village is unknowable to someone who didn't grow up there. I've spent years walking around the streets- following West 4th until it flips out and crosses 12th, wandering through the crooked blocks off Bedford- but I still get lost when I have to meet someone at Chumley's for a drink. For the purposes of this project, I've defined these streets at the boundaries of the neighborhood: Leroy Street on the South, 6th Avenue on the East, Washington Avenue on the West, and Horatio Street on the North. Were these taken in the wee hours of the morning?
actually, this series was mostly shot around 6-8pm at night- the tenement series was done later- around 10pm-1am.
