December 26, 2003: Mingus!
My parents adopted Mingus the day before we got Thompson. As Thompson fans already know, Mingus is Thompson's half-brother by a different father. Mingus is two weeks older, 1.2lbs heavier, with slightly shorter hair and a bigger nose. My parents named him Mingus after Charlie Mingus, who trained cats to use the toilet. Mingus is equally as cute as thompson! Hes looks like he is spolied to death. ps what is he sitting on in the 3rd pic, at first i thought it was a knife (maybe hes one tough cat) but then i thought maybe its a kitty comb or something...
yeah- it's a kitty comb. mingus is my parents' pride and joy. they certainly treat him better than they ever treated us!
Bass player extraordinaire, bandleader, composer, lover, fighter. And you're telling me Charlie Mingus was a cat trainer, too? That's so interesting, because as few people know, the bass clarinetist Eric Dolphy was well-regarded for his method of training dogs to scoop up their own poop. As Mingus fans know, the two men played together often. It seems likely -- now that I know of their shared interest in animal elimination -- that they had more to talk about than mendacious nighclub owners, unreliable drummers, and the difficulties of getting a cab.
