December 28, 2003: At the bar

These are a bunch of reject shots that I took during the last month, as I was shooting the Tenements, West Village, and NoLIta series. I experimented with a bunch of long exposures in various bars, but to no avail- either the places were too crowded, or they were too bright, or else there was no place to put the camera. If I could, I'd create long exposures reminiscent of Edward Hopper paintings- with one or two lonely looking guys pulled up to the bar. Bonus points if you can identify all of the bars photographed above.

Welcome to the Johnson's was one of the first bars I went to in new york over the summer. The plastic covered sofas and the vomit out front were interesting to say the least. But i guess you need one if you're going to have the other.
is the first one botanica?
correct on botanica- that was one of the hard ones. and obviously, correct on the johnsons. any other guesses?
uh, well, you can read milady's bar and spring lounge, so those are gimmes.
yes- there's only one left!
hey, cool site! i stumbled across it randomly. the wide angle shots of NYC with the big sky & clouds are pretty breaktaking.
WXOU?
no- try again!
Blue and Gold?
What do I win?
sadly, no! but you could think of this place as the 21st century blue and gold. one hint: it's in LES.
the magician?
Man, I've seen some ugly motherfuckers in my day but the faces I've seen here belong to some really sad, grim, ugly fuckers. God, I am so lucky and your butt face asshole are a sad bunch of fucking ugly fucks.
The fifth picture looks like the Magician. But I lived on the Lower East Side for four years, and I can't place the last two for the life of me. Are they inside Milady's? It looks so classy from the outside...
indeed! the last picture (the guy at the jukebox) belongs to the Magician! congrats to the winners!
