February 3, 2004: Chinatown Markets 1

The open-air markets along Grand and Mott Street are one of my favorite Chinatown features. It seems like you can buy almost anything in those stalls: fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, nuts, dried shrimp, herbs, congee pudding, household items, pirated DVDs. Sometimes I like to wander along those streets late at night, after the markets have closed. There is something completely authentic about the stench and muck caking the sidewalk.

those purple vegetables look disturbingly like sex toys. great shots =)
Great colors, Jake. That one of the things that I love most about open-air markets.
Those green apples look like sex toys I use. ;>
Love these.
those purple vegetables are eggplants, right? are those the only fruit in the purple hue family? what about other weird color fruit? that might make a good post.
also, i saw a stand selling durien but the spiky cantelope thing sort of freaks me out.
Jake
First-timer here. Yes, they're eggplant and I was oh so excited to see them. I've been ordering Chinese eggplant and chicken from Szechuan Delight (in Park Slope) since the beginning of the year - religiously. They're amazing vegetables, or are they fruit?
Um, I'm hungry.
Hey Jake- do you have some sort of special MT Plugin for handling/reszing pix?
