February 12, 2004: At the Fat Black Pussycat

Dive bar connoisseurs know the area around Macdougal, Sullivan, and West Third Street in Greenwich Village. Populated by an interesting mix of homeless people, NYU students, and tourists, the neighborhood supports an unusually high concentration of bars selling $3 mugs of American beer. While some are partial to places like Down the Hatch, Josie Woods, or the like, I prefer the Fat Black Pussycat. Named for a long forgotten 1960s club on Minetta Lane, it has the emptiness, neon signage, forgiving pool table, and odd seating arrangement that I crave in a dive bar.

Surprisingly, it was even more dively back when it was "Kettle of Fish" (I forgot its name before KoF). Good dive bar. Definite one of the best in that immediate area.
Interestingly, they also offer (per their handwritten sandwich-board sign) free wi-fi! I didn't try to fire up a connection, but were I to hang out there more, I certainly would try now and then.
