February 13, 2004: Welcome to Nature Park

My fiance K is a second grade teacher here in Manhattan, and for the past few months her class was studying Central Park. As a capstone project, the class decided to play Olmstead and Vaux and design their own park. I think the result is breathtaking- a symphony in tempera paint, popsicle sticks, and glue. While I naturally prefer my own interpretation of Central Park, from 1981 (below), I acknowledge that the third grade Nature Park is a more advanced treatment of the same subject matter.

So adorable. Check out how the kids made sure our overly consuming culture was expressed in the huge "Gift Shop."
I FIND BOTH INTERPRETATIONS OF OLMSTEAD'S 2ND BEST PARK PRETTY FAB BUT I AGREE THAT THE NEWER INTERPRETATION IS MORE SOPHISTICATED. OF COURSE THE TEACHER IS TERRIFIC.
