February 18, 2004: Battery Park

Growing up in 1980s New York, I was never quite sure of the difference between Battery Park and Battery Park City. Now, having spent the last 5 or 6 years skating on the West Side, and having gone to High School and taught at Stuyvesant, which is in Battery Park City, the geography is clearer. BPC is the development built on landfill raised from the World Trade Center construction in the early 1970s. Battery Park is much older- with some parts going back to the 17th and 18th centuries. It is also built mainly on landfill, but you'd never know to look at it. The highlights of a visit are the World Trade Center temporary memorial, Castle Clinton, and the war memorial, plus a great view of the Statue of Liberty. [Unrelated: the invite for next week's Photoblogger Event is live at Rion's site]

Good group, Jake.
This last one kills me.
Once again great photos!!!
I was wondering if you happen to know if the statue in Battery Park with the people lifting their hands to the sky has a name or not? I have searched on the net and cant seem to find it mentioned anywhere.
Also, your pictures are awesome.
Thanks Lisa
