March 1, 2004: Queens Inverse

I took a bunch of shots while I was out skating on Sunday afternoon. None of them were that interesting- fairly low contrast, nothing spectacular in terms of light or subject. I was going to ditch the whole set, but then I thought of working a little bit on my inverse skills. I've tried inverses a bunch of times before- on the spirograph series, in some self-portraits, etc- but I've never felt like I've really pinned down a good process. These came out a little bit better, mainly because I worked on them as positives first (color correction, contrast, saturation), then inversed, then pushed the color balanced. Does anyone else have any good tricks for messing around with reject shots? I refuse to use Photoshop filters for any reason- but I'm open to other ideas.
those are seriously cool and a bit spooky. the one of the city from the air (2004_2_queensinverse_5.jpg) reminds me of a computer circuitboard or something.
as for playing around with photography, I like to mess around with duplicate layers and blending options, or duplicate layers and blurring/messing with hue/saturation/brightness/contrast/colour balance, and then fiddling with transparencies.
cheers =)
Well done. I love the third one down especially. Good stuff.
These are really nice...
In the Pepsi Image the sky is now red, which is the color of Coke...
Great stuff... will you make more?...
Very interesting. I'm not sure yet if I like them, but interesting.
Did you notice that the Pepsi-Cola sign has been moved off the Pepsi building and onto a freestanding sign? The last time I was on Roosevelt Island they were in the middle of moving it, and it said Cola, then a few hundred feet to the right, Pepsi.
I REALLY love the image with the black sky. Excellent! I just favorited you on photoblogs.org!

awesome shots man, that pepsi-cola shot is solid
i'm surprised that no one noticed that i flipped the pepsi sign horizontal- so it's actually a negative inverse, or something! in reality, it reads correctly from manhattan looking towards queens, not from queens looking towards manhattan, which is where i was standing.
dizzamn, the jake's got serious inverse-skilz. nice. specially like Queens inverse.
This is awesome stuff. I'm not one that can critique photography but I saw these and looked at them forever. I'll definitely be coming back to see what else is here.
I'm impressed so much I'm speechless.
They must have just moved the Pepsi sign recently. Is it that accessible that you can get so close to it? Check out my Fotolog for a Pepsi sign shot from Roosevelt Island:

And a few others are on my blog in the archives somewhere:
