March 3, 2004: Jake's 75 Year Plan [click for large version]

My 75 Year Plan

Summer is coming fast, and I've got no job lined up. At the MBA program, everyone seems to have their plans in place, and it got me thinking that I really need to nail down a clearer direction in life. Casting about for examples, I turned to my favorite movie, Bottle Rocket, particularly the scene where Dignan prepares his famous 75 Year Plan. I realized that I needed something like that, and during a slow half hour in Global Business Environment class, I drew one up. The thing is, it's great for the long-run, but still doesn't get me any closer to figuring out what to do from May to August. If you happen to know an exciting tech, software or web company that needs an ace strategist, consultant, or business development guy, feel free to drop me a line.

Impressive. Disturbing, but impressive.

Note that I'll be pissing on your grave whenever the plan runs out, Dobkin.

Also, you left out "Reject Columbia Medical School for a third time."

i know- there is a bunch of stuff that i should have included- like my love for they might be giants and terrible alternative music, but it seemed sort of off-topic. and i forgot to include my enemies- that will be in the next version.

Maybe you should spend the next few months writing a '75 year life plan application' - revolutionary software that allows people tp plan their entire existence - it will sell like hot cakes.

You could call soemthing Windowsy like LifePlan X.75 or something Macintoshy like iLife-75.

Ha ha. I was just thinking along the lines of Hinchcliffe-- would you write my 75-year plan? I can't seem to even wrangle a 1-year plan these days...

Or better yet, have lots of other people do 75-year plans and then compare them, linking similarities and creating further personal, creative, and professional connections.

To the people who read this blog, if I ever make a 75-year plan, I give you permission to shoot me.

2 things:

1. I totally agree with corie that this could be -I hate to use the next word - Friendster meets Monster. I think people are looking to use their creative/professional/personal skills in more and more unconventional (read: not 9 to 5) ways in order to a) feel fulfilled, b) meet others, and c) yes, make a little money.

2. What program did you use to do this?

Recently, I was in class and started to do a similar thing with decision trees, since we where talking about them in class. I had made it a few nodes deep into the tree, and was happily mapping out future uncertainties, the probabilities of the events, and possible decisions I would be making. I kept at it until I noticed that I was attempting to apply a tool from class to my life, which was really fucking disturbing. It's amazing the lengths I can go to while attempting to not pay attention in class.

i used visio, which is my favorite program of all time. then i outputted to gif and resized in photoshop for better clarity on the 585px version.

Have you heard of this company called LinkedIn? It's basically what I described above. Ironically, I just heard about it today, as a friend invited me to join.

According to their site:

LinkedIn lets you reach recommended employees, hiring managers and business partners through referrals from people you already know and trust. You won't receive spam or unwanted requests since people can only reach you if I decide to forward a message to you because it looks like a good opportunity.

Let me know if you'd like me to "invite" you to join as part of my professional network...

This is the greatest thing I've ever seen. I've been wondering how to use Visio to improve my personal life and now I've found the answer.

Ari

That is pretty brilliant, especially the beautiful dot-dash line between "past" and "future." I did something similar recently but it was just 1) GET THIS FUCKING BOOK DONE 2) ????? 3) EVERYTHING OK.

Jeesh, I only use Visio to draw floor plans of where I want to move furniture. I'm scared of Jake now... he needs help.

Jake, you show fewer nodes in the future than in the past.

I love this chart. I wonder if Tufte reads your blog. He should probably consider selling this chart as his third poster, you know next to the Russian Space Mission and Napoleons Attack at Moscow.
The plan rocks...
I wonder what ever happened to the Mathematical understanding that the value we do not influence becomes the x axis (you know... like time...) and that progression then happens from bottom to top on the Y axis?... hmm...
Okay, I seriously love the IA.
: D
