March 15, 2004: Chicago 1

My trip back from Seattle included a stop in the windy city- my first time here. I started off the day by making my way in from the airport, then by cab from the loop up to North Michigan, where I was staying. First impression: a beautiful city of skyscrapers, the closest cousin I've seen to New York City yet. Second impression: something here is slightly off. The streets are a little too wide, one block off the main strips you see completely empty blocks, and it might be my imagination, but the city seems somewhat segregated along north/south lines. Tomorrow: sightseeing!

you're in my new hood! many of the photos you took .. of the buildings and lake and lighthouse are things that i see every day from the floor to ceiling windows of my office on the 31st floor of a building on michigan ave. also, i get off on the clark/lake el stop and walk along the river every day to get to the office. it's a nice walk. here are some of my daily views
Neat skybridge shot -- I think it's the same one as here.
Chicago is a little off -- so flat! in geography and buildings (outside the central core)! And yes, extremely segregated, but few big cities aren't.
Have you been to Philly? It felt rather NY-like in the all of three hours I spent there.
i always felt that philly felt more like boston, since so many of the buildings and streets are from colonial times.
where is that skybridge?
those are some excellent pictures jake. when i went, i thought that the castle was an odd thing for a water pump.
as for the architecture, many people say that chicago has some of the best architecture for a big city in the u.s. damn chicago having that fire and using it for urban planning.
The skybridge is right near the river. Looking at the map, I want to say it's on the first block north of the river, somewhere between State and Michigan. It's been a few months, so I don't remember precisely.
I really like these pictures!
yeah- the skybridge is actually attached to the north side of the wrigley building.
I never heard the term skybridge before. When I lived there we just called it a bridge. Great shot of the plane, by the way. You don't see that everyday. Wow!
Please disregard what I said about the skybridge. I didn't even see it until after I posted. I have heard the term skybridge before. I'm really sorry. I still like the plane shot, though.
America's Biggest Town.
what. i walk through the wrigley building every day. i guess i should start looking up.
Next time check out the Leaning Tower of Niles: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/ILNILpisa.html
It's my favorite thing in Illinois.
