March 31, 2004: Bronxville

James grew up in Bronxville, and spent the last few months of his life living there, at his parents' house. The wake was held a couple of blocks from the Bronxville station where I took these pictures. Lots of people were there. Everyone was looking at the collection of photographs that the family had gathered- it seemed like there were hundreds of them. There was even one of the two of us which I had never seen before. And lots of beautiful white roses. I paid my respects to James, and chatted with some old college friends before returning to Grand Central. I went back up there this morning for the funeral. I'd never been to a Catholic mass before, but it struck me as being very beautiful and appropriate. People read passages from the Bible and parts of James' play. Some spoke very movingly of James' faith in God, and the grace he had in the face of his illness. Afterwards, I took one last walk through Bronxville and went home.
