Most of the high rise apartment buildings in Los Angeles have helicopter pads on the roof. I'm not sure why- in the six years I've been visiting LA, I've never seen a chopper land on one. Maybe it's for fire evacuations or earthquake stuff- or maybe they just assume that one day, everyone will be rich enough to afford their own flying car. Anyway, I love going up to the empty helicopter pad at night. It's amazingly serene up there, and almost perfectly silent.

The City of Los Angeles requires buildings 75 feet or higher to have a heli-pad. Yeah, its strange. You'd be amazed at all the 74 foot tall buildings in the city.
that is such an odd law- b/c 75ft is only about 8 stories, right? i need to figure out why this one is on the books.
that top one is awesome - how'd you do it?
and my first thought was that because of all the traffic, maybe companies use helicopters at times to get around. not that most places could afford that, but who knows?
Maybe they're preparing for the day when total gridlock is finally achieved -- a final, unifying interlocked traffic standstill.
Wow, great photographs. The lighting on the 2nd pic is just amazing.
hurm, I LIVE in Los Angeles and I never knew that. I always wondered why so many buildings in downtown had heli pads. My office building might even have one but knowing me I'd open up the door, walk out onto the roof and it would lock behind me. Kinda like when your looking for that olympic sized swimming pool.
