April 10, 2004: California 2

I'm in love with the beaches in Malibu. Last summer, I spent some time on the coast and visited a bunch of them- Will Rogers, Zuma, La Piedra, etc- but yesterday I discovered one that blows the rest away: Point Dume. It's not far from Zuma, on a small peninsula. At one end, there is a large rock mastiff where people rock climb. We were there to take some engagement pictures and enjoy a bit of California solitude. On the way back to town, driving down the PCH in darkness, I thought of the great Wilco/Billy Bragg/Woody Guthrie song, California Stars:
I'd like to rest my heavy head tonight
On a bed of California stars
I'd like to lay my weary bones tonight
On a bed of California stars
I'd love to feel your hand touching mine
And tell me why I must keep working on
Yes, I'd give my life to lay my head tonight
On a bed of California stars

That's a fantastic poem. Great feeling and use of repitition.
The setting and rising sun are the photographer's best friend(s) ;-)
The last two photos are the kinds of things that make those of us in land locked states have fond fantasies of California in general and LA specifically.

I thought that the rock face looked a little too familiar. I thought it was in Indiana Jones the last crusade, where Sean C. ran around with the umbrella at 1:20:16. However, it looks like my visual memory is slipping a bit. I know I've seen it in another movie, which clearly isn't listed properly in IMDB. Grr.
Nice photos by the way
It's very close to where the final scene in "Planet Of The Apes" was filmed.
point dume is amazing! i climb there as frequently as possible, and the scenery never ceases to amaze me. for those who think is looks familiar, it is. arnold shot a campain video there, the saturn commercial with the surfer who keeps dinging the car with his board, amoung countless others.
we in la are are very lucky to have a location such as point dume. (did i mention that from the tops of the rocks, dolphins and whales are frequntly spotted)
peace
