We're having the NYC Bloggers event on Monday from 6-8pm at the Apple Store in SoHo. The first panel has Nick Denton and Jason Calacanis facing off in a conversation about professional blogging. In order to ground the conversation in real world data, and to add fuel to the fire, I've prepared a trivial analysis of their empires using Technorati. I've included my own sites for the sake of comparison, and because it makes me feel big and important. If you want the Excel file I used (please point out any errors- I did this in about 15 minutes), you can find it here. I'm not going to draw any conclusions from the analysis- but I hope it adds a little bit of depth to the conversation.

sweet charts. i think since this is a "photoblog" you should have taken pictures of the charts, but that's just me.

sources of error:
1. only using technorati- if i have time, i'd like to redo the analysis using another data set to see if the trends match.
2. this says nothing of traffic- only links on technorati. the traffic data is private- although some conclusions can be gleaned from alexa.
3. nick's sites have been around longer. so you'd really need to do this and then either average by week, divide by number of entries, or just compare for the same period- say the last 2 months. still, it gives you a sense of the size of the empires at this point in time.
4. i haven't included links to or from kinja in nick's total, b/c i consider that to be something other than a blog.

This is awesome! You know how I love blog fights and I've been eating and breathing Excel for the past week, so watching my two worlds collide like this is fabulous. It definitely would be useful to compare over similar time periods. Also I think it would be interesting to use some sort of average site importance, using Google page rank maybe or the Technorati ranking feature. For example, while Calacanis may have more links over the last two months (since he has so many sites), Gawker's importance on the web surely outweighs those of all the Calacanis sites. Are you going to present this at the event? I love it!

megalomaniacs.....

What part of the axis is the douchebag factor?

So excited about the event tonight! It's free, right?!
