May 11, 2004: Lion Cut

Our vet has recommended that we get Thompson a lion cut- that's where they shave the body but leave the ruff, arms, legs, and part of the tail fluffy. It's supposed to be more comfortable for Persian cats during the summer, and it prevents some shedding around the house. Of course, the downsides is obvious: all the other cats will think he's gay. As it happens, Thompson's brother Mingus already got his haircut, so we got a preview of the new look. What do you think- should we go through with it?

oh, poor mingus, i feel sorry for him! but then again, my aunt and uncle accidentally got that cut on their normal tabby cat last summer, and i must say i looked way funnier on him than on a persian.
you could just do a overall trim, without leaving the mane and the poof on the tail...
but mingus looks so pleased with himself! thompson will feel unkempt and behind the times when mingus comes over if he doesn't get the same haircut.
YES! it's so funny and cute
I heard he was depressed. But he looks cuter than I thought he would - I was thinking a Mr. Bigglesworth kind of cut.
Dear God YES!
it doesn't look that bad. you can barely tell from certain angles that it is a lion cut. but if it helps the cat, you should do it.
that hair cut makes him look tough, not like the pussy cats they are. go for it.
I just turned gay looking at those pictures. The power of that cut must not be underestimated. Oh my GOD, I need some dick like, right now.
he looks so regal!
in pic 4 he looks like a stuffed animal
I think the other cats will just think he's metrosexual.
I have a longhaired cat that I shave every summer now. He is a lot happier when the NYC heat wave kicks in.
seems like the consensus recommends we get him the haircut- does anyone know a good kitty salon for us to take him to? i don't want to do it at the vet.
jake, please ask them not to do the tail poof. is there a rule that the poof has to be there? does it protect something? it certainly doesn't protect mingus' dignity...
For the record, Jake's dad though that Mingus would be ridiculed if the other cats saw him. Jake's sister said, "Are you kidding? Mingus would be gang-raped."
Maybe this page will give you second thoughts...

Then again, I used to shave my old english sheepdog each summer..
I would have responded sooner but I was too busy looking for the number to Animal Control. For the love of Pete (or Pussy), please don't do that to Thompson!
Jesus, don't do it. The other cats will beat the crap out of him.
Just saying.
I have always shaved my persian with the lion cut but have never been brave enough to do the tail. Now, seeing these pictures, I think we will have to go ahead with the tail next time! I still have not stopped laughing!
Best looking pussy I've ever seen!
Hey I know it may be too late and you people don't know me from Adam but I'm crazy about your images and I'm voting NO on the poodle cut.
Do that, and the next thing you know, he'll be sawing at his wrists with the pooper scooper.
Shave him bald if you have to but please...have mercy.
Okay, so Mingus will be very COOL (after all he is named after a jazz musician). But I plead with you NOT to cut Thompson. Cats never had hair salons and did just fine with their long coats before they existed and Thompson's beauty and personality are defined in his looks. This is where outer beauty helps inner beauty!
Sincerely, Francine
Our cat (a Persian) LOVES getting shaved. He thinks he is much more handsome with it and we tell him so. He likes getting pet and everything feels better. For comparison, rub each others backs on the bare skin, then put on down parkas and give each other a back rub.... which do you prefer?
He also can explore the house better without knocking everything over. Just demand that the groomer not cut his whiskers and make sure to get the hair in between the bottoms of his paws... sometimes they miss that.
We also prefer the mutton chop lion cut, where they cut under his chin, cause that fur usually gets pretty messy dipping into his water when he drinks.
DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!!!!!!!
"Of course, the downside is obvious: all the other cats will think he's gay." The downside is that your cat is owned by a bigot.
Did you get a recommendation for a groomer? I'm considering the same for my new Persian. Google searches and Gothamist and Craigslist postings haven't yielded any results.
