May 22, 2004: Gowanus 3

Walking in Red Hook after midnight is like walking in dreamland. Strangely shaped buildings and shadows, odd characters lurking in the darkness, empty buses floating down abandoned streets. At the very edge of the neighborhood, Mike and I stumbled on to the scariest place I've ever been in New York. It was an empty lot between two warehouses, populated by creatures from after the apocalypse, living in the burned out shells of cars and mobile homes. In the middle of the yard was a large glassy puddle with an overturned baby carriage and reeds growing out of one corner. I felt the distinct sensation of being watched, and got the hell out of there as quickly as I could.

The scary vacant lot! I was way too afraid to take pictures.
That last one? I dunno, man, it's so bright; if I didn't know better, I'd swear it was a day shot from an overcast day. It's amazing how differently mine turned out.
This is a really nice set. The transition (moving down the page) from dark to light is a nice effect.
i do love the reds in mike's picture, but there is something unholy and spooky about creating a daylight effect in the middle of the night. those last three pictures were taken in almost pitch black darkness- so i think i was open to f2.2 or something- although the depth of field looks a little bit smaller. again, these were 15 second exposures, so it's hard to tell.
Thats pretty cool. I thought you had taken these photos from dusk til' dawn. I just looked at that last one again and still looks like a morning shot. Nice.
yeah- i was home by like 1:30, so these were definitely still at night.

Say hello to the poor people richie rich.
That last photo could pass for sunrise on a midwestern grain elevator.
Couldn't resist adding some info on pictures 3 & 4.
They are actually from the set of a John Tuturro movie, called "Romance and Cigarettes" that was in production the night of May 12th.
They had inadventantly set the building on fire doing a fire effect. Luckily most of the background extras were firemen. I heard the story the next night when I worked.
In the background of photo 4 (which is of the craft service table from the film) you can see one of the aerial lifts providing light for the filming, and beyond that a Titan crane.
